James Madison was one of the major influences on the Constitution. He studied other ancient governments in order to prepare for the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia and he addressed the convention over 200 times. He also kept detailed notes of the proceedings. He went further to write the Federalists Papers supporting the constitution to get it ratified by the American People. He promoted a large government where power was divided equally between 3 branches, unlike Britain, with a system of checks and balances in place. Finally, he promised a Bill of Rights to Americans and then he sorted through hundreds of Amendments and helped pick the most important. He also have the idea to combine the 5 rights in the First Amendment and he had the idea to have 2 houses; a house of representatives for big states based on population and a house of the senate for the small states based on equality.
