John Wilkes Booth killed President Abraham Lincoln.
On April 14th 1865, on the eve of Good Friday, President Lincoln was shot in Ford's Theater in Washington DC, while watching a play, "Our American Cousin". He was sitting inside the State Box (an enclosed room with an opening facing the stage.) with his wife, Major Henry Rathbone, and the Major's fiancé, Clara Harris.
At approximately 10:15-10:30, the play was in its third act. John Wilkes Booth walked through an unguarded and unlocked door to the State box (room). John F. Parker, had been assigned as the President's bodyguard but abandoned his post, earlier, during the play intermission, and wandered off to have a drink at a saloon, next to the theater. Booth then opened the State Box door; was armed with a single shot, Derringer, and a hunting knife, came up behind the President, and shot him once, in the back of the head, near point blank range. Booth then yelled "Sic Semper Tyrannis" , leaped out of the front of state box, attempting a firm landing on the stage. Instead, of a firm landing, he snagged the spur of his boot, on a decorative flag, which hung on the outer edge of the State Box, breaking his left leg, when attempting his land on stage but managed to escaped from the theater.
Dr. Charles Leale had been in attendance, in the audience, rushed to Mrs. Lincoln, checked the President's pulse, and when he raised his eyelids, saw indication of brain damage. "His wound is mortal; it is impossible for him to recover." The President would not be able to endure a carriage ride to the White House, and was moved from the theater to the nearest house across the street. One of the boarders at the House; heard a disturbance in the street, and quickly went out the front door of the Petersen Boarding House. He saw the President being carried into the street and yelled, "Bring him in here, bring him in here." The invitation was accepted.. The president's breathing grew fainter; , he remained comatose for 8.5-9 hours. Nearly every leading doctor in Washington DC. stopped by to offer help and assistance. A large crowd gathered outside in front of the Petersen House.. During the President's last hours, the Reverend of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, the Lincoln family church, prayed with those present, when the end came at 7:22 AM, the following morning, April 15, 1865.
