Who took Jesus into custody?

In general terms, the gospels tell us that the Jewish religious leaders were opposed to Jesus and wanted him out of the way. In the synoptic gospels, the trigger for his arrest was the Cleansing of the Temple (Mark 11:15-18). In John's Gospel, the Cleansing of the Temple was moved to the very beginning of Jesus' mission, and the trigger for his arrest was the resurrection of Lazarus (John 11:47-53).

Almost all Christians would know that Jesus frequently complained about the Pharisees and those who emphasized law over love. Matthew 23:23, is just one example. It is a constant theme of the New Testament.

This came to a dramatic peak when Jesus finally made his way to Jerusalem (for the first and last time), got very upset when he visited The Temple, over turned tables, whipped some business people with a rope, and once again gave harsh statements about the Scribes and Pharisees.

Temple guards went sent to arrest Him then but backed off became some of the crowd was on His side and maybe feared causing a riot or some priest later complained maybe even some of the Temple guards were now starting to believe what Jesus was saying.

A few days later Jesus was arrested by "a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people," Matthew 26:47

At his trial at the palace of the head Jewish high priest, the one quoted witness testimony had to do with Jesus saying he could destroy and rebuild the Temple in three days.

But this charge and others (not specifically mentioned) apparently not enough so the Jewish High Priest puts a direct question to Jesus, emphasizing He is under oath: "Are you the Christ, the Son of God." Matthew 26:63.

Jesus' answer has the HIgh Priest accuse him of blasphemy, saying no more witnesses are needed. Those running this trial agree: "He is worthy of death." Matthew 26:66 for this comment and they beat Him up a bit and make the decision and plans to put Jesus to death Matthew 27:1 They hand him over to Pilate, the Roman governor where the accusation was that Jesus had said he was the "King of the Jews."

So, to specifically answer the question, the first attempt at arrest was because Jesus was certainly "disturbing the peace," if not worse, at the Temple. And his previous doing of miracles and criticism had made the chief priest and teachers of the law very 'indignant." Matthew 21:15

After he was arrested no charges seemed to stick but under direct questioning by the High Priest, the High Priest said Jesus' response was blasphemy. When turned over to Rome authorities, there seemed to be a new spin put on things, the accusation was more as if Jesus was stirring up unrest against Rome, sedition, or encouraging rebellion. (Although Jesus very clear, several times, that his 'kingdom was not of this world.' and/or ""Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's." Matthew 22:21

Yes, Jesus was arrested during Holy Thursday (after the Last Supper) at the Garden of Gethsemane. He was praying to GOD if He could take away the agony He was about to face. After that, He woke up His three closest disciples: James, John and Simon Peter, for Jesus knew that His disciple, Judas Iscariot, had betrayed Him and was going to arrest Him. Jesus was then taken to the High Priests, who questioned Him.
