In Roper v. Simmons, 543 US 551 (2005), the US Supreme Court held that it is unconstitutional to execute juvenile offenders, effectively raising the minimum age for capital punishment to 18. Roper overruled an earlier Court decision, Stanford v. Kentucky, 492 US 361 (1989), that determined execution was permissible for juveniles 16 years and older.
