Circuit courts are so named due to the tradition from whence they started. In the common law, in England, judges at the appellate level would literally 'ride circuit' going from town to town along a preset circuit, or route, and hearing any cases on appeal from the local trial judge that occurred since they were last there. Thus circuit courts in the US, which gets its legal history and tradition from the English common law, follow a similar pattern of grouping local jurisdictions into geographically proximate appellate districts, which are known as circuits. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has jurisdiction over federal appellate cases originating from nine western states, including California, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska, as well as territories like Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. It reviews decisions made by federal district courts, as well as some federal administrative agencies, and its rulings can significantly influence federal law, particularly in areas such as immigration, environmental regulations, and civil rights. The Ninth Circuit is the largest of the federal appellate courts, both in terms of geographic area and caseload.
