They limited the powers of their government by Separation of Powers. This means that power is divided among 3 branches. The 3 branches are Judicial, Executive and Legislative.
The principals that were included in most state constitutions are the people's rights. The state's include what the residents and people living in the state are entitled to as far as their rights.
The most important features of the new constitutions were : establishing the republican form of government, the separation of powers and establishment of a "balanced government", equality among citizens, the need for religious freedom. the separation of church and state and the economic liberty (slavery disappeared)
