Why did employers hire children?

Cheaper labor. They pay children less. in many situations they don't pay them at all. for example the way that the price of your chocolate is kept down is through child slavery, the same applies to many other businesses.

If you are talking about child labor, it is because at the time when this was allowed, many families needed to have as many family members working as possible in order to bring in enough income. Since there was a demand to have children working at the time, businesses began hiring children to do certain basic tasks in factories.

Currently today, there are still many countries around the world which have a large portion of the child population working in factories.

Child Labour was cheap and easy, they could pay children less than minimum for the same amount of work. Families needed every source of income they could generate and children often followed their parents into the mines and other industries. Children worked long hours and were not protected from the hazards of the work, which is the main reason why child labor was outlawed. Working children were unable to get an education, thereby creating a cycle where their families were doomed to the same future.
