The Government
Anti-Federalists originally opposed the Constitution because they believed it concentrated too much power in a central government, threatening the sovereignty of individual states and the rights of citizens. They feared that a strong federal government could lead to tyranny and undermine the liberties fought for during the American Revolution. Additionally, they argued that the lack of a Bill of Rights within the original Constitution left citizens vulnerable to governmental abuse. Their concerns highlighted the tension between federal authority and states' rights in the early years of the United States.
