Patent 19023, for a pocket cigar lighter, was awarded to a company called Art Metal in 1928. Beginning in 1932 it was infringed repeatedly by a company called Evans Case Company, but a Judge Martin T. Manton denied the Art Metal any relief. In 1939, the judge resigned and was convicted of conspiracy to obstruct justice and to defraud the United States, based in part on the fact that he was taking bribes from Evans Case Company. The infringement cases were vacated and reargued, with Art Metal winning. They then managed to convince Congress that the seven years between the original finding of infringement and the decisions on re-argument had earned them a patent extension of seven years.
