You are entitled to be there, but your presence isn't really necessary. All the judge is going to do is hear prosecution testimony as to why you should be charged with the offense you were arrested for. No witnesses will appear, and you (i.e.: your defense attorney) wll not be allowed to put on a defense. Therefore. . . you don't REALLY need to be there.

Can you visit an inmate if you have a felony?

Visiting an inmate when you have a felony record can vary by location and facility. It's recommended to contact the prison or jail directly to inquire about their specific visitation policies for individuals with felony convictions. In some cases, you may be required to seek permission or undergo a background check before being allowed to visit.

How long does a public defender have to contact an inmate?

At your request, IF you qualify for one, one will be appointed. You will be added to their caseload and be contacted by their office. If you are an inmate of a jail and awaiting trial it will probably be sooner rather than later inasmuch as the 'speedy trial' rule is applicable to you. However, if you are an inmate in a prison (already tried and convicted) it will probably be somewhat longer since there is no "speedy trial" requirement which apoplies to you.

Can an inmate request a Writ of Certiorari?

Yes, an inmate can petition for a writ of certiorari pro se (for himself). Clarence Earl Giddeon is one inmate who successfully petitioned the Supreme Court because he was denied court-appointed counsel in a felony larceny trial. His petition was successful, and the Supreme Court held in his favor in Gideon v. Wainwright, (1963).It's generally better to have professional legal representation, however.
