A written grant of authority from the king is typically known as a royal charter. The first American to establish a colony in Texas was Stephen F. Austin, who received a land grant from the Mexican government. He founded the first successful Anglo-American colony in Texas in 1821. Austin is often referred to as the "Father of Texas" for his role in encouraging settlement in the region.
The Pennsylvania Colony was established because William Penn was in possession of a land grant that had been owed to his father before he died. Penn was a Quaker and wanted to establish a colony where there would be freedom from religious persecution.
The Mayflower Compact was the Pilgrim's own form of government. A charter is a grant of authority (permission) from the king that they, the colonists, are allowed to start a colony.

In 1606, King James I of England granted a proprietary charter of land to two branches of the Virginia Company to establish colonies in the Americas. The Plymouth Colony was permitted to establish a 100 square mile colony between Chesapeake Bay and the modern United States-Canadian border, between the 38th and 45th parallel. Their colony at Popham failed. The London Company was permitted to establish their colony between Cape Fear and Long Island Sound between the 34th and 41st parallel. Their colony was Jamestown. Under the charter's terms, they could not establish colonies within 100 miles of reach other.
Maryland was governed as a proprietary colony under the control of the Calvert family, specifically Lord Baltimore, who received the land grant from King Charles I in 1632. The governance structure allowed Lord Baltimore significant authority, including the power to appoint the governor and establish laws. The colony had a representative assembly, which included elected delegates, enabling some degree of self-governance. This system was designed to promote religious freedom, particularly for Catholics, while also attracting settlers through land grants and incentives.
