Yes, you can. Not from the fire department but from the vehicle manufacture. There is no proprietary equipment on a fire truck. But you may need a special license to drive it.
In Illinois, to drive a fire truck, you typically need a Class B CDL (Commercial Driver's License) with a fire truck endorsement. This allows you to operate commercial vehicles over 26,001 pounds, which is the weight classification for most fire trucks. Additionally, drivers must meet specific training and certification requirements established by their fire department or local authority. It's important to check with local regulations as they may vary.
You need a license to drive a tow truck in Michigan. You need a license to operate any vehicle on public roads.
As long as you have a license you can drive a truck, there are no extra requirements.

He needs a CDL to drive a fire truck on the highway. Most heavy duty truck mechanics have that license. In my state (CT) you can drive a fire truck with a Class B (straight truck CDL) or what we call a Q endorsement which is a fire apparatus only endorsement of your normal license. You take the Class B test and they'll give you just the Q. I don't think its as "governed" as the CDL is. On another note the Q endorsement lets you drive any FD truck from the little ones to the 80,000 lb ladder truck if you get checked out on it. I understand the intent of the law or allowance I should say, but there are considerations, hazards, and skill about handling that kind of weight which was covered in my Class A CDL class that weren't really mentioned on my Q. If that ladder was a commercial vehicle you would need an A license for that weight.
You need the license to drive a truck and then you need to apply at a company that searches for truck driver. They will tell you if they need somebody or not.
A Class B license would be all you need to drive a garbage truck. This is a special class license used to operate certain vihicles such as the garbage truck.
