Bomb squad (they prefer to be called "Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technicians" or EOD Techs) members are selected competitively from eligible law enforcement officers in the agency or region the squad serves. Usually, candidates must have a minimum number of years of service as officers and a record of good conduct. A background in chemistry, military experience in ordnance, and/or mechanical aptitude is a plus.

Most police EOD techs complete a course at the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama. Participants must be sponsored by their employer agency. You cannot attend the course on your own.

Only very large agencies will have full time EOD units. In most cases, being an EOD Tech is a part-time collateral assignment. You work your regular job, and respond to bomb calls when they arise.
