It depends on the type of blackmailing. If it involves violence or money, it is certainly illegal. However, if it is more along the line of threats that are legal to make, such as, "If you print anything about me, I'll publish your secret," then it is essentially legal, though someone doing this could be held civilly liable if they carried out their threat.

Emotional blackmail is simply distasteful and a type of manipulation. The most common type is when someone says, "If you love me, you will do what I want." So as long as you do what they want or avoid what they want you to avoid, they will at least go through the motions of giving affection.


One way to deal with certain types of blackmail is simply to confess to or come out about whatever is being held over your head. For instance, you cannot blackmail a someone for being gay if everyone already knows. The blackmailer only has power when there are secrets. If someone is addicted to something, the way out would be to overcome the addiction and then admit that it was a problem.
