Making a false statement to Police is normally a criminal offense. If the Prosecution determines that a witness statement given to police is a deliberate falsehood, they can charge that person.

Depending on the severity of the lie, how much it hinders the investigation, and the nature of the offense involved, the person may or may not be charged, though, because the sheer volume of cases if every incidence of lying to the police were prosecuted would paralyze the court system.

As long as the juvenile is past the "age of reason" and knows what lying is, they can be charged with the offense, just the same as an adult.

Is it against the law To lie to a police officer about being on felony probation?

As with most police-related questions, it depends on the circumstances. Specific law also varies from state to state. It is not always a crime to lie to the police. If you are providing a sworn written statement and you lie, it is a crime. If you are intentionally providing false information intended to mislead a law enforcement officer in the course of his/her duties, it is a crime. If you falsely report an incident or a crime, that is a crime. If you are stopped for speeding, and the police officer asks if you know how fast you were going, and you lie when you answer, that is not a crime. As a general rule, if the police officer is investigating something and you intentionally lie in order to protect yourself or someone else, or in order to intentionally mislead the officer, you may be guilty of a crime.

What happens if a police officer lies to get an arrest?

Depends what the lie is. Police officers are not under any oath to tell the truth. They do not have to tell the truth if asked if they are an undercover officer, for example. Dennis Radar, the 'Bind Torture Kill' serial killer, was caught by a lie. In one of his (frequent) letters to the police, Dennis asked if he could be traced, if he sent the next one on a floppy disk. The police replied that it would be ok. Sure enough, Dennis' next package contained a floppy disk, and the hidden metadata embedded in the files gave the police the name and location of the killer. He was duly put under observation, arrested, and charged.

What happens if you lie to the police as a joke about bodies buried in your yard?

You learn the consequences of acting in a mind-numbingly and profoundly ignorant way. You do not make that kind of joke with the police. No police officer worth paying would assumethat such comments aren't worth checking. Your property and house could be subjected to a search. If I were in charge you would get a bill for the search for making frivolous claims.

Why can the police lie to a suspect while the suspect may not lie to the police?

Because laws have been passed that make it illegal for a suspect to lie but no laws have been passed that make it illegal for police to lie (UNLESS THEY ARE TESTIFYING UNDER OATH). There isn't a great deal to motivate a legislature to pass a law restricting police to the truth yet there is sufficient motivation to keep criminals from lying to police. If you become a suspect you should keep your mouth shut and consult an attorney. If the attorney happens to lie on your behalf you are indemnified. Even though you can act as your own attorney in court, you cannot lie to police and then claim you were acting as your own attorney when you did it. It's still you that did the lying.
