Depends, the first thing we do when we are born is breathe. If you mean before a fire then its walk fast through the station and put on our turnout gear, unless you're a driver/engineer, then we get in the truck/engine and drive to the fire

To understand my answer, I guess you have to understand that there are a couple types of firefighter, each having a different role.

The easiest way to put this is that mostly there are two types of firefighter. Engine Company and Truck (or ladder) company. (keep in mind there are several other types. Rescue, Squad, Etc. but mostly these two) Engine Company are the guys who use the hoses and actually put water on the fire. Truck company is in charge of Vent, Enter, and Search. They cut holes and break windows in order to vent smoke and heat from the building. They forcibly enter buildings. (breaking down doors) and they search for victims and the main part of the fire.

Ideally, with the engine and truck companies arriving simultaneously, the truck company will go to work making entry into the building while the person in command (usually a chief) will ascertain information about the fire such as where the main fire is located within the building, are there any victims, and what factors he must consider while fighting this fire. Meanwhile the engine company will secure a water source. This is usually in the form of a fire hydrant. They will drop a firefighter off at the hydrant to connect the supply hose to the hydrant.

Next, the engine company will take hoses to the entry of the building while the truck company begins a search. (it's important to note that before any firefighter enters a hazardous area, they will put on an air pack and mask along with full protective gear)

Once the truck company finds the seat of the fire, they'll let the engine company know to come in with the hoses. Once the hoses are in place, members of the truck company that are still outside the building will begin venting the structure and the engine company will put the fire out.

I'm sure I've left pieces out, but that's generally the idea.

Find out if there are any (human) lives at risk, or if it's just stuff being damaged. Risking lives to save lives might make a kind of sense. But risking lives to save stuff doesn't.
