A private eye or Private Detective, or usually called Private Investigator (PI), would first need specialized training, self-defense courses, knowledge of basic laws and offenses, a professional license issued by the State, an office or place of business, a business license, a car, a telephone, a cell phone, and clients. A PI would additionally need equipment including binoculars, still camera, video camera, surveillance cameras (small, example, "hat-cam") gun (only with training and gun permit), stun-gun (many states require training before using), tracking equipment (ex. GPS tracker in small attachable unit), computer, laptop computer, computer software (to learn about a person, persons, or companies), pen and paper. PIs also need a good relationship with local police departments, and would need to be a good communicator, whether in writing or verbally. PIs must have common sense as well as good observation skills and investigative skills.
