It depends on what they are used for. A tracking dog - bloodhound Detection dog - Labrador patrol (bite dog) - Belgian Malinois, Dutch Shepherd, or German Shepherd Usually, it's not a particular breed, but bloodlines of a breed that are the best. Police dogs are usually bred specifically for the type of work that they will be performing. It's similar to breeding show winning dogs. You would use the best of the best for breeding, then take the ones from the litter that show the most promise, and start training from there.

Another popular kind is the Belgian Malinois. They look like German Shepherds but are a little smaller and faster. And not quite as handsome imho.

It is my experience that Rottweiler's are not as agile, intelligent, or motivated as the above breads. Rottweilers have their place as working dogs, in my opinion they do not make good police dogs.

Many dogs used for detection can be any of the hunting breads, Labradors, Retrievers, etc. As well as mutts or dogs of mixed breads. Detection dogs only need to have the appropriate temperament to hunt and retrieve, or what we call play drive. Dogs trained in Patrol work need to have courage, stable predictable emotions, and an even temperament because they could be in a position where a suspect will try to hurt them or scare them.
The term 'police dog' is usually applied to the German Shepherd breed. However, the dogs used by police forces today can be any of a hundred breeds; the breed is chosen for an ability necessary to the task that will be performed by the dog.

The german shepherd and the doberman are the two most common breeds used as police dogs. They are both very intelligent, alert, and obedient. Their nose senses are very strong.

Some other breeds that are used for police work are the Giant Schnauzer, the Belgian Malinois, and the Belgian Tervuren. I understand that Beagles are sometimes used for detection, and Bloodhounds can be used for S&R.
