How an officer becomes a detective and progresses in his career from there is determined by the law enforcement agency where he works. In most police and sheriff's departments, being a detective is a "rotational" assignment, meaning that uniformed officers become detectives for a period of time (typically 2-3 years) before rotating back to uniformed patrol. If the detective promotes to sergeant, he is immediately assigned to patrol as a supervisor, and then can seek to be re-assigned to detectives as a detective supervisor.
In some large agencies, detective is a permanent rank. Once that rank is achieved, the detective will spend the rest of his career as an investigator. If he promotes, he may or may not go back to uniform, as department policy dictates.

To become a detective, you typically need to have experience as a police officer first. While a college education can be helpful for this career path, it is not a mandatory requirement. Instead, candidates often attend police academy training and gain experience in law enforcement before moving into detective roles.

First of all - persons interested in this kind of career don't start off as dectectives. VIrtually all persons who attain that duty must start out as basic police officer/patrol officers. They then proceed through their career, all the while demonstrating their abilities to their fellow opfficers and their superiors. If it is detemined that they have the aptitude to perform that job they might be given the opportunity to become a 'Plainclothesman' which is the usual career step up to detective. Believe me. . . not everyone who aspires to become a detective makes it.
Once a Police Officer has been promoted to Detective, he or she may thereafter be promoted to Police Lieutenant. There would be only one promotion left after Police Lieutenant.
