Leadership qualities are necessary for officers, who must establish and maintain discipline and efficiency, as well as direct the activities of the fire fighters in their companies.

I say this as a 20 year Veteran of the FDNY...Loyalty, Brotherhood, Physically fit (You may need to carry 300 lbs people down stairs) and most importantly you need to understand that every time you run into the sh*t there is a chance that you will not come out...

A firefighter needs to be patient, critical in thinking, goal oriented, curious toward learning a little bit about everything, able to focus on directions and assigned tasks during an emergency situation, courageous or able to look past fear as well as desiring to help others and placing value on life of others/strangers.
