In the early 1900's people were starting to realize how useful a Shepherd could be in the police force.
They're very good at police work. They're good trackers and good at personal protection. They're smart and easy to train. They're loyal and fearless.
As the name implies, they were originally bred to herd sheep (sheep herd, shepherd). However they can also be used to herd cattle, goats, ducks, chicken and geese.
Yes they are smart. The Rottweiler is a natural guard dog with a mellow disposition who is successful not only in police, military, and customs work, but also as a family friend and protector.
They can do, breeds of dogs aren't bothered by who they work with breed wise.
Giant Schnauzers were used, along with German Shepherds, as messenger, guard and police dogs in Germany during and after WWII. They are extremely alert, intelligent and loyal, so they can certainly be trained for protective service.
Their intelligence and dedication is very high. They can work several hours without giving up, most dogs tire after 'working' (tracking, sniffing etc.) after a short time, but the German Shepherds are very dedicated and tough at this
I promise I'm not being hypocritical on this one; German shepherds for both. German sheppies are generally smarter - (in top 10 most intelligent dogs) and are commonly used for police work, search and rescue etc. because of this. Also, shepherds are bred to be agile. They are very common in agility competitions because of their lean bodies and power. If you would've asked who had more brute strength, it would be a Pit bully <3 but shepherds win this round!
It's because of their strength, loyalty, intelligence, and hard work.
It's impossible to say. German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, Doberman Pinschers and Rottweilers are the most commonly used. There are many different breeds, and even some 'mutts' used in law enforcement work. German and Belgian Shepherds are probably the most familiar type associated with police work, but, there are many other breeds represented. Bloodhounds - Rottweilers - Beagles - Retrievers - almost any breed that has a particularly specialized talent that is associated with that particular breed (e.g.- smell - tracking - etc.) can, and will, be utilized.
Most are German shepherds, the popular idea of Police Dog conjures up this breed. I understand the Russians, who make considerable use of Police Canines, used and continue to use Huskies. They have beautiful blue eyes.Huskies are better cold-adapted than the Shepherds, an important requirement in the USSR. As there are different police dog requirments- some other breeds certainly have been used in detective work ( in the US and Europe) such as specially trained scent hounds such as Bloodhounds.
A Malinois is a breed of dog that is often used for police work, search and rescue, and as a family pet. They are known for their high energy levels, intelligence, and loyalty. Malinois are often mistaken for German Shepherds due to their similar appearance.
A German Shepherd is a breed of dog, used for guarding, herding and police work.
