Factors that hinder the learning of English:

Often, a person lives in a neighborhood or community where everyone speaks his or her first language. The person then has no need to learn the language. When the person does encounter the new language, someone translates for them. In many families, the children learn English in school and them translate when needed for parents and grandparents.

Many factors within the English language make it diffult to learn. Examples include:

  • idioms (phrases that have meanings other than the literal meaning of each word)
  • irregular spellings
  • one letter can make different sounds depending on the word in which it is used. For example: "ch" in chew sounds different than "ch" in chute. "Hard" and "soft" c and g are other examples. (cat/city go/gem)
  • homographs

i.e. "Bill" can mean money owed or "bill" can be another word for a bird's beak

  • homophones

i.e. see = what we do with our eyes

sea = the ocean

For these and many other reasons, English is one of the hardest languages to master for second language learners.
