Captain Cook initially was not complimentary of the M?ori , and encounters with the people resulted in violent clashes. In one xample, occurring in October 1769, the Endeavour was off the coast of the North Island. A group of M?ori in a canoe came alongside the Endeavour, and negotiated a trade of fresh fish. As Tayeto, the servant boy of Tahitian chief Tupaia who had joined Cook after Tahiti, went to accept the fish, he was grabbed by the M?ori, who paddled off at top speed with the servant boy. Cook's crew fired on the canoe, killing one M?ori. Tayeto leapt overboard and was picked up by the Endeavour. Because of this event, Cook named the area Kidnapper's Bay. Eventually, however, through persistence, relations improved and eventually Cook was in the position of being able to trade with the M?ori for fresh supplies.
