I remember seeing a special on spam last year, on the Discovery Channel, I think.

The people that marketed pork made their money by the pound. They had a part of the pig they were trying to find a way to market, the pork shoulder. So they came up with spam.

During WWII a good source of protein was needed for the troops in the field. I can't remember all the details of what they hap prior or what was wrong with it but the solution was the precooked spam.

Hormel, the packing company for SPAM, first produced it in 1937. It was an ideal product to use during WWII because it did not require refrigeration and provided an excellent source of food to troops. One of the most interesting things about SPAM is that the US shipped an enormous amount of it to the Red Army in their conflict with the German Army. The Russians really liked it because it was compact and was as valuable to them as gasoline and ammunition in their battle with the German Army.
