No one "becomes" anything Trans, it's a state of personhood like having green eyes or able to curl your tongue or being able to see the whole rainbow, it innate and unchangeable. Just being around a transgendered person (transsexual, transvesite, crossdresser, drag queen...) will not "turn you into one" just like your friend having green eyes won't mean after 2 years you have green eyes instead of the brown you used to have. No scientist or layman has yet found a "cause" and chances are if there are "causes" they are many and varied.

A transvestite will often only know that they are a "transvestite" after they read about or meet others. Until then it often is just a driving desire to dress and look like the opposite sex. Just like as a child you are taught "that is adult, that is child", until someone gives it a name it's very hard to get a handle on these 'drives.' Like the drive for sex until they explain what it is "OH that's why ....." Even after being able to explain that they are a transvestite most cannot tell you why, only that they are. Imagine trying to explain to an alien why you are Scottish or Nigerian or Cherokee or ... it's just a part of who you are. If your friends hang around you enough will they just spontaneously become Apaches?

The best answer to this is "Are you already a transvestite?" You must define who you are, no one else can tell you.
