i once asked a young french girl how to pronounce a street named alpine minot, and the way she said it was

"alpin mee-noh",

where al -- as in Alfred; pin --- as in safety pin; minot pronounced as me (me, my, mine), and "not" as in know but without the "w" sound, so that it sounds like "noh".

of course the American and general pronunciation of Minot (North Dakota) as in "Mine + Not" most probably came about because of the dominance of the mining & shipping industries of the time (tying knots) and stayed that way.
