Let's assume you want to speak in sign language to a person who knows sign language and is the same nationality as yourself...
Essentially there are two forms of sign language (well, actually there are many forms, but it is easier if we just think of it as just two!)

  1. Spelling the words by using the hands and fingers. Each letter of the alphabet has its own 'hand/finger' sign. For example to spell A-E-I-O-U, use the index finger of your right hand to point to (touch) the tip of the thumb/fingers on the left hand in sequence. Touching the tip of the thumb represents -A-, touching the tip of your index finger -E-, the middle finger -I-, third finger -O-, little finger -U-! An -X- is signed by making an X with your two index fingers! Easy! You only need to learn 26 signs, and then you will be able to spell millions of words!
  2. Signing the words. Learn an official sign language, such as British Sign Language (BSL), or American Sign Language (ASL). You can go to special classes. You will learn gestures and hand/arm movements which represent whole words! To say words this way is much quicker than spelling every word letter-for-letter! It is also important to speak the words as you sign then. The other person can then see your mouth and facial expressions and thus get a better understanding of what you are trying to say.

It can be quite a challenge to learn to speak in sign language, but it is well worth the effort. You'll meet and make new friends. And they will very much appreciate the efforts you have made to communicate with them.
