The Japanese writing system is based on three main scripts: Kanji (Chinese Characters), Hiragana (a set of symbols that make up different words), and Katakana (another set of symbols used for sounds and foreign borrowings). If you learn to reconize the symbols of Hiragana and Katakana you will be able to defrinciate between the Chinese and Japanese written language. You will only see Kanji in Chinese while Japanese is fused with their own symbols.
