How to study Chinese well?

first understand the basic meanings of radicals, which would help you understand what category a specific character belongs to, and you would be able to guess the basic meaning of that character by doing so. Get a dictionary and go over words that u don't know. Listen more to how Chinese speak in order to understand their ways of expressions and learn the grammar within. Listen to Chinese songs would help you as well.

The best way is to come to China and live among those who can't speak English. That way you are forced to use Chinese. Go to school and learn Chinese in China.

But if that's not possible, take a class, use a good chinese textbook, do lots of exercise and do all the homework as much as you can. If you want to learn Chinese used in mainland, be sure to learn simplified Chinese.

Watch Chinese films especially for kids since the Chinese used is simpler than, say, watching Chinese news.
