The easy way to recognize a linking verb is that a linking verb acts as an equals sign, the object of the verb is a different form of the subject (Mary is my sister. Mary=sister); or the subject becomes the object (My feet got wet. feet->wet).

The present participle verb roasting could be used as a linking verb when the subject and the object of the verb are the same thing or different forms of the same thing. Example:

A turkey roasting golden brown. (the turkey is becoming golden brown, a linking verb)

A turkey roasting for dinner. A turkey roasting in the oven. We are roasting turkey. (not a linking verb)
