It is a long A vowel word. The E is silent.

Our child learned to read with the Zoophonics program. The "e" sound is represented by an elephant named Ellie. Ellie usually says the short vowel e sound, but when at the end of the word Ellie gets bossy and tells the vowel to say its name (the long vowel sound). In the word "shake", Ellie is at the end of the word and so she gets bossy and says, "A, say your name 'a'." Similarly, in the word "broke", bossy Ellie says "O, say your name 'o'."
