The French equivalent for GCSEs is the DNB (diplôme national du brevet). At the end of 3ème (9th grade), all students have to take written tests in French, History, Geography, Civics and Maths, plus one foreign language for international sections.

The result of the test also takes into account the grades obtained throughout the year in French, Maths, Music, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, PE, Computer science, Foreign language 1 and 2 (for most students, English and Spanish) and Art - all of them being compulsory.

Pupils studying Latin, Ancient Greek or a regional language will also be graded in these fields.

For 2011, an additionnal exam in Art history has been added to the list.
