The Malay language used to be lingua franca of the Philippines, until Spain "discovered" the islands. When Ferdinand Magellan arrived to the islands, his Malay slave Enrique of Malacca had to translate from Portuguese and Spanish to Malay to communicate with the natives of Cebu. Many of our words in the Philippine languages are Malay cognates or loandwords. The number "five" is "rima" or "lima" in some Malay dialects and "limang" in Filipino. In fact, the Malay language is used by some of the Muslim communities down in Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago, many Filipinos say this simply as an assumption just to the fact that these Muslims live close to Malaysia and Indonesia. The Bajau, Yakan, Samal and Tausug groups use Malay as a lingua franca from the Zamboanga Peninsula down to the Sulu Archipelago, because many works as merchants going to and from Malaysia and Brunei as well. The Maranaoans and Maguindanoans however don't speak Malay. The "barbekyu" (barbeque) was brought over by Malays and Arabs. Arabs call it "kebab" and Malays call it "satay". The big difference between Philippine barbeque and Malay satay is that the Philippine version is made with pork and ketchup, both ingredients considered "halal" with Islamic traditions. The Spanish and Spanish-Filipinos twisted the satay, honestly, I consider the Malay and Arab versions than the Filipino versions.
