Scientific researchers at the University of Sheffield in England published a report - see link below - in July 2010 confirming this, although their research is more concerned with shells in general: eggs were produced by the earliest egg-producing creatures millennia before chickens evolved.

The scientists involved in this research weren't interested in solving unsolvable riddles, but in discovering more about how shells are formed.

The question of whether the chicken or the egg came first can never be answered: it is unanswerable. Either answer can be counted as correct. In Christianity, god made all animals and the animals were adults, so in that perspective the chicken is first. A strictly scentific view is that animals slowly evolve and while chickens were evolving the first creature that could be called a chicken had to come from an egg and its ancestors were not close anough to the modern chicken to be called chickens, so the egg would be first.
