In French there are three definite articles (the definite article is "the") which are the masculine version le, and the feminine version la, and the plural les. Generally when "la" is at the beginning of a name, it is because in the original French, the name was "the" something; the beautiful, the fat, the rich, etc. Of course, there are other languages than French which also use that syllable, so other etymologies are possible.
