The term E.R. in Biology refers to the endoplasmic reticulum of a cell. This is membrane-like structure, continuous with the nuclear envelope (membrane around nucleus). Without ribosomes attached (smooth e.r.), it is responsible for the production of lipids and hormones. With ribosomes (rough e.r.), it creates proteins used for digestion, enzymes, and other various cell activities.
