A fallen arch or flatfoot is known medically as pes planus. The foot loses the gently curving arch on the inner side of the sole, just in front of the heel. If this arch is flattened only when standing and returns when the foot is lifted off the ground, the condition is called flexible pes planus or flexible flatfoot. If the arch disappears in both foot positions - standing and elevated - the condition is called rigid pes planus or rigid flatfoot.

Who is Herschel Fullen?

Herschel E. Fullen was an artist who resided in Brown County, Indiana. In the 1930's - 50's he shared (perhaps ownership) an art gallery in Bean Blossom, Brown County, Indiana called the "Brown County Art Barn Salon." His partners, at least part of the time, were Charles Dickey, John Higar and Joseph A. Trover. Of these, Joseph Trover (1915-abt 2002) was the principal player. Trover is a listed artist with a pretty good track record of auction sales. The others, including Fullen, are somewhat lessor known or appreciated. Trover was referred to as the master of the palate knife and some of Fullen's work reflects similar talent. I have two such original pieces by Fullen. They are very heavy. One of them is on canvas, but the other one is on a large piece of wall panelling. I also have an oil painting by Fullen which is a typical brush piece on canvas. It would therefore appear that Fullen had an experimental streak. All of these, and two others I have personally seen, are signed "Herschel E. Fullen" in very clear and easily read script.
