The right of the people to express their opinions without restraint.

However there are limitations of speech:

  • Obscenity - bad language, cursing
  • Slander - spoken statement that can damage a persons reputation
  • Libel - written statement that can damage a persons reputation
  • Fighting Words - words that may lead to violence
  • Seditious Speech - threats to overthrow the government
  • Clear and Present Danger - ex.: if someone says i have a bomb and I'm gonna blow up the subway, there is a clear and present danger to the people.
