In English sentences the usual word order is -- Subject + verb + object.

eg The dog chased the cat. -- the subject (dog) did the action of the verb (chased) to the object (cat)

This is called an active sentence.

In passive sentences there is no subject.

eg The cat was chased. -- The object (cat) is now in the subject position and the verb has the form

be + past participle.

If you want to say who or what did the action you can add -- by + noun eg,

The cat was chased by the dog. by + noun (or noun phrase) is called the agent.

More examples;

Active: We keep the sugar in the cupboard.

passive: The sugar is kept in the cupboard.

active: The police brought the boy home.

passive; The boy was brought home by the police.
