3 plate mould is chosen when you want to use point gate on the plastic part but you dont want to use hot runner or hot runner cannot be used. It means that when you want to use point gate with cold runner, 3 plate mould will be used. The 3rd plate in 3 plate mould is similar to the monifold for hot runner, is for material flowing.

The advantages to use 3 plate mould is the point gate and automatic dropping of material, low cost. The disadvantage is material waste because of sprue gate.

What is the Difference between 2 plate and 3 plate mold?

A 2-plate mold consists of two plates that separate to release the molded part, whereas a 3-plate mold has an extra runner plate that allows for gating and runner system separation from the molded part. The additional plate in a 3-plate mold enables more complex part design and gating options compared to a 2-plate mold.
