According to the 2001 census, Telugu is spoken by 5-6 % of the population of Tamil Nadu=> total Telugu speaking population is not more than 50 lakhs. However, since half of Telugu people in TN are now Tamil speakers,it is safe to say approximately 1 crore (out of 2011 census pop of 7.2 crores in TN) population got some Telugu ancestry.Naidus form 40-60% of Telugu people in TN.So it must be 40-60 lakhs (i.e 5-8% of TN population).Vanniyars alone comprise min 1.5 crores. Some of them refer themselves as naikars sometimes which end up in wrong identification of them as Naidus. So some people use exaggerated numbers as high as 1.5 crores for Naidu. Correct population is not more than 60 lakhs.Census report on languages:http://www.censusindia.gov.in/Census_Data_2001/Census_Data_Online/Language/Statement3.htm
