In terms of native speakers the second most spoken language is Spanish. Mandarin (Chinese) is the first and English comes third.
The most spoken language in the world is currently Mandarin Chinese.
Mandarin Chinese is the world's most spoken language, with over a billion speakers globally.
The world's most spoken language is "Mandarin Chinese". About 1.635 billion of the worlds population use it. Fun Fact: The Mandarin Chinese language does not have an alphabet! That number is absolutely ridiculous, Mandarin does not even have over 1.2 billion speakers. Mandarin has a little over 1.1 billion speakers, as it is mostly spoken in China (which accounts for about 850 million). The most spoken language is actually English. It is virtually spoken every place on Earth. It is very much used in business, everyday life, government, etc. all over the world. Numbers for English drastically vary, but the range is from 1.5-2 billion speakers (of which about 450 million are native speakers). English is also the most common official language, with over 1/4 of countries having English as an official language. It is also widely taught in schools all across the world (for example, in South Korea they teach children English around middle school).
"Inter mundos" is a Latin phrase, which means "between worlds" in English. Latin was the language of the Roman Empire and has been widely used as a scholarly and scientific language throughout history.

1 .Yes. Being one of the oldest languages in the world, it has died off over the years. 2. It is not dead at all. Most prayers and religious chants said by Hindus, a fourth of the worlds population, is said in Sanskrit. However it is not a spoken language for normal conversation, so may in that sense be considered unused or "dead". One cavaet however, legend has it that Sanskrit is supposed to be the universal language spoken all around the universe, particularly in astral realms, even if not currently used in this planetary system. It is supposed to come and go as a main language. Currently it is not used.
Well, the chances are that you will not have heard of more than 3/4's of the worlds languages. There is around 2,093 languages in the world. In Europe there are 200 languages, America just over 1000. etc. Many languages in the world are spoken by only 5 - 50 people, like different Native American languages, and other languages in Asia and Australia etc. The European languages are the most widely spoken in the world. Chinese being the most widely spoken, not outside of China's borders though, just within China mainly. But European languages like English, French, German, Spanish etc are spoken on every continent in the world apart from Asia.
Chinese is spoken as a native language by more people than any other, with Spanish as second. English is the most widely spoken second language, with French, Spanish and perhaps Russian following closely
