Traditionally, vulgar language referred to the way of speaking of the lower classes in society (usually illiterate and uneducated), like the peasantry in the Middle Ages.

Nowadays, we used the word vulgar to describe profane language, like swearing and cursing. Using vulgar language is still considered to be unprofessional and inappropriate in many contexts.
