from Dictionary.com:

Origin:
bef. 900; ME scole (n.), OE scōl < L schola< Gk schol leisure employed in learning

The Greek source would be first, schole, leisure employed in learning. What this meant was that someone could not work, but they learned instead.

The Latin source is next, schola.

Both the Greek and Latin roots are the roots of many English words today: School, scholarship, scholar, scholarly, scholastic.

The Middle English scole would come next and is a more appropriate root for the word school, which is very similar to the German word for school (der Shule), which shares the same "oo" sound.
