Bethlehem is located on the West Bank and is under the control of the Palestinian Authority. Roughly 20% of the population is Palestinian Christian (and rapidly declining) and most of the remainder is Sunni Muslim.

Most Palestinians speak Arabic, though different ethnic groups speak various dialects of the Arabic language.

Additionally, since Bethlehem is close to the border with Israel, many Palestinians cross the border for work or to visit family. As a result, many also have decent command of Hebrew. There is also a small tourist industry where the guides speak numerous Western languages.
