To tell if something is preposition, people commonly use the "box method" (preposition+ the box). However, I learned from a teacher an even better method that has helped me. Ask yourself "anywhere a rat can go" (it works majority of the time, though occasionally when not discussing physical things it may not apply). Using both methods helps the most, but the more verification, the better :)
