Hodgepodge, meaning a collection of dissimilar components or a mixture of dissimilar ingredients, is a variant of hotchpotch, which itself is a variant of hotchpot, a legal term meaning the gathering together of properties to secure equal inheritance for the children of intestate parents, probably from the Scots hotch ( to fidget or shake ) and pot, and originally meaning something like " the pot into which we shake the contents of various containers."

Hodgepodge comes from the Middle English hochepot, that is derived from Old French for stew.

hotchpot comes from the Middle English hochepot, from Old French, mixture, stew : hocher, to shake together; see hotch+ pot, pot.
