There are many hypotheses about the origins of language. There's no known way to study this seriously because it happened in prehistory and it's not in the fossil record. For over a hundred years ending in the late twentieth century some linguist organizations banned discussion of the topic as simply argumentative with no method of providing objective evidence to support claims.
On the other hand, any discussion banning any form of inquiry has to be approached with caution. There are vibrant and informative theories based on linguistics studies. Some such studies suggest that Sanskrit is the oldest language still spoken on earth; there may be other contenders.
