Greek does not belong to any branch of the Indo-European family of languages. It is a branch unto itself, that has no become many languages. Rather, Greek has replaced itself as it evolved (koine Greek to modern Greek) Greek is believed to have been influenced by the Semitic Language family (Arabic, Hebrew, Aramaic), a far older family of languages, but it still counts as one of the more far off Indo-European languages, along with Persian, Kurdish and Armenian.
