First of all it is LB, not LP (I made the same mistake a few years back on a Math test :P). Secondly LB stands for Linear and B stands for Pound (a mathematical abbreviation).

lb is an abbreviation of the Latin word libra, which is, itself, a shortened form of the full expression, libra pondo, "pound weight." Pondo is the origin of the English pound, and even after that word replaced libra, the abbreviation was retained.
